BEFAG PARKETT

BAKONYERDŐ Zrt. Saw-mill

At tourists' service

The company's area of operation offers a great variety of opportunities for hikers and those seeking recreation. The forests from the Balaton Uplands to the High-Bakony are abundant in natural and cultural values attracting visitors to the area.

In addition to substantial forest economy, Bakonyerdo Rt. knowingly endeavours to focus on purposes of public wealth. The company launched its public wealth programme in 1998 and thereby opened certain areas to the public. By placing sets of outdoor furniture (desks, benches, other recreational facilities) mostly in the Balaton National Park, the company has created an environment suitable for tourists' needs. Several lookouts, forest playgrounds, exercise grounds, recreational parks and nature trails, which are in harmony with their natural environment, have been established. The forestries spend several million HUF a year on maintaining the tourist trails and tourist facilities.

Visiting the natural flora and fauna in woodlands facilitates relaxation and the enjoyment of the scenery. It is pleasant to take a walk or hike in the forests. All our forests are well suited to these purposes, therefore park forests have been established in Badacsony, on Szent György Hill, in Szigliget, on Somló Hill, in Cuha and Gerence valleys in the Bakony Mountains, in Koloska Valley in Balatonfüred, in Malom Valley in Balatonalmádi,...etc.

One of the most visited tourist attractions in the Tapolca Basin, Badacsony, a monadnock of volcanic origin can be found in the area of Monostorapáti. Since the park forest has a great attraction, the Forestry has renovated some facilities and established rest stops as part of the public wealth projects: the Köbölkút rest stop, the renovation of the Ranolder cross, the establishment of stone shelters, 'Rózsako' has been renovated, barriers have been placed around lookouts, the Kisfaludy lookout tower has been built, outdoor desks and benches have been renovated and all are being maintained too.

On the hill you can walk along the geological and botanical nature trail, which has been established by the Balaton National Park, where you can find bilingual information boards. Along the trail you can study peculiar basalt shapes and former mine walls. You encounter geological sites that demonstrate particular moments of the geological past. The length of nature trail is nearly 4 km. You can access it from the southern side of Badacsony Hill from the Kisfaludy House.

The park forests around the hill are managed (tourist trail maintenance, litter collection) by the Monostorapáti Forestry together with the Balaton National Park. Maintenance is carried out with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Veszprém Directorate of the State Forestry.

It is one of the most popular excursion spots in the High Bakony. Nature-made beauties and conscious infrastructural development have turned the Cuha Valley Park Forest and nature trail into one of the most beautiful pearls of the region.

The nature trail is easy to access via public road or railway, between the Vinye and Porva -Csesznek railway stops, and within easy reach (maximum 40 km) from major cities (Gyor, Pápa, Zirc).
The forest classroom is an organic part of the nature trail, where there is an opportunity to discuss what you have seen and experienced. The nature trail is open all throughout the year. Admission free.
The millennium railway and viaduct is a wonderful example of the harmony between technology and nature; it may well be one of the most wonderful railway tracks in the country. Steps have been taken to proclaim it an industrial monument.
The beautiful railway station building of Porva-Csesznek has a touch of Hrabal's atmosphere.
Please, protect nature so that future generations can enjoy it as well.

Salföld, Pauline Monastery and church ruins

The ruins of the former Pauline Monastery, the only order of Hungarian origin, are situated in the woods southwest of Salföld - an area under the management of Bakonyerdo Zrt.'s Monostorapáti Forestry.
The monastery and the nearby area have been very popular with tourists for a long time; consequently the Forestry realized that there was a need to turn it into a civilized rest stop.

In the project called the 'Public wealth development of historical sites in the area of the Monostorapáti Forestry', completed in 2002, renovation, restoration, and utilization plans were drawn for several ruined churches and castles, on the basis of which the Forestry undertook to participate in organizing and constructing those works.

The ruins of the monastery can be found at the edge of the forest and on top of a small hill in the middle of a small valley southwest of Salföld. The former Pauline church, consecrated to Mary Magdalene, was first mentioned in a document in 1263. Additional references in documents occurred in 1307 and 1475. The monastery was first ruined in the Turkish period.
In the 1960's it was explored and conserved in the course of which the ruins were restored. However, there have been no subsequent regular restorations; therefore the walls have become damaged.

Due to a successful application to the Ministry of Agriculture and Regional Development, in 2002 and 2003 funds became available for restoring first the old stone building in the nursery near the monastery: a shelter with timber benches and desks, barbecue places were made and information boards were placed there. The next step was aimed at the conservation of the monastery ruins; in 2004 and 2005 with the help of funds raised from the winning applications of the Ministry of Agriculture and Regional Development, the County Government, and the National Cultural Heritage Base Programme the nave, the sacristy, and the triumphal arch were renovated. In the years to come we wish to carry on restoration with the help of further applications.

The rest stop is maintained every year by the Forestry with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Regional Development and in co-operation with the Veszprém Directorate of the State Forestry. Please protect nature!

The Park Forest on Somló Hill is one of the most wonderful mondadnocks in Trasdanubia and belongs to the Balaton National Park. It is Hungary's smallest yet one of the most famous wine regions. The ancient wine grapes called 'Somlai Juhfark' are grown on the southern slopes of Somló Hill. In excellent climatic conditions and on basaltic tuff soil such a harmony of aromas and colours is created that it has come to be called the 'wine of wedding nights'. At higher altitudes vine lands are replaced with park forests with Turkey oaks and downy oak trees with many protected animal and plant species. On the top, you can walk on virgin grass to the north until you get to the ruins of Somló Castle and the lookout tower with an extremely wonderful view to the environs. The park forest is open all throughout the year and accommodation as well as numerous catering units can be found on the slopes of the hill. You can get there on the Budapest-Celldömölk railway line from Devecser or Somlóvásárhely railway stations or drive on road 8 to Somlóvásárhely, or from the direction of Pápa-Nagyalásony.

One of the most frequently visited tourist spots in the Tapolca Basin, Szent György Hill, is a monadnock of volcanic origin in the area of the Monostorapáti Forestry.
The heavy tourist traffic made the Forestry realized the need for improvement and as a part of social wealth development the Forestry established rest stops (shelter, timber desks and benches) on the hill.

The trail follows the most frequently visited tourist routes of the hill, showing many of its natural beauties. The nearly 4 km long trail looping back into itself is made up of seven stops, with Hungarian and German information boards. The first stop provides information about the geology of Szent György Hill, the following stops draw your attention to the flora of the hill and the "ice cave". The trail takes you to the 414 m high summit along the probably most well-known and most interesting sight of the hill, the "basalt organ pipes". On the top another information board helps you to identify the elements of the unforgettable scenery of the Keszthely Mountains, the monadnocks of the Balaton Uplands and the Somló Hill. The protected fauna of the area can be seen at the last stop of the 1.5 hour route.

The park forest surrounding the castle is managed (maintenance and litter collection) by the Monostorapáti Forestry in co-operation with the Balaton National Park.
Maintenance is carried out with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Veszprém Directorate of the State Forestry.

It lies above the village of Szigliget in the southwestern part of the Tapolca Basin in the the area of the Monostorapáti Forestry.
On the top of the 229-metre-high volcanic hill there are the ruined walls of an irregularly shaped castle facing north and south.
Abbey Favus of Pannonhalma had the castle built after the Tartar invasion, while the outer castle in the northern side of the hill was added in the 16th century. The castle, which was never invaded by the Turks, began to fall to ruin in 1697. Due to lightning the majority of the castle burnt to ashes, then King Lipót I ordered the destruction of the ruins in 1702. The remnants were reinforced in 1931, 1953, and 1965-66.

Recent years have witnessed large-scale exploration works and the renovation plans have been completed. The renovation of the Szigliget castle is still going on.
